Station 19 continues a solid third season with a second episode centred on a serious problem within society.

The crew is going about their day as they get used to the newest member of the team Vasquez, a B-Team member, who has taken Herrera’s spot. They watch a news conference about the new Fire Chief Dixon and while they joke about him he arrives for a tour. Of course, they all make a great impression. Here’s what happened in “Indoor Fireworks.”

The theme of this episode is a gruelling one as it centres on the topic of gun violence. The explosion of fireworks in a local store causes some customers to believe it to be a shooting which prompts a very serious discussion on the state of society. Everyone is becoming increasingly more fearful of the statistical possibility of being in the wrong place at the wrong time and Station 19 beautifully portrays that fear and anxiety. It comes full circle within the secondary storyline with Andy and Ryan which has fateful consequences. The topic of gun violence was prominently shown in Grey’s Anatomy so it’s good to see them not do a remake of the same storyline and instead take it on from a different angle.

Meanwhile Maya is focused on pursuing her career goals over her friendships and Warren reveals a traumatic event from his past that pushed him to become the man he is today. The Maya storyline is feeling a bit weird and is the weaker of the episode, but Ben’s issues and past help bring some depth to a long-standing character in this shared Shonda universe. He has always been this stoic, selfless figure, and his past has started to show us why he is that person. Oh and Jack stupidly sleeps with Vasquez’ wife because there needs to be some affair drama.

And as I said last week, this episode needed to continue the new tone and style of this season to keep things fresh and feeling more like a proper firefighter show. Thankfully, it continues to use the closer framing, intensity and stylistic choices (probably due to it being the same director), allowing this show to continue an already better third season. With so much change on the horizon for these firefighters, can it sustain this fiery drama?
