With a blizzard affecting the city of Seattle, Station 19 is a safe haven for those who need refuge causing the firehouse to be overcapacity. Jack and Andy discuss their drunken hook up which will “never happen again.” Maya tries to have small talk with Andy, but she can’t bear to be in the same room with her. Oh and of course Pruitt is debating how to tell Andy about his prognosis. Here’s what happened in “Ice Ice Baby.”
The major story of the episode is of course Pruitt’s news that he doesn’t even get to tell Andy, but she finds out herself. It was never going to be a good time, but weeks after Ryan’s death certainly isn’t convenient by any means. It doesn’t help that more than half the station knew this already which is going to further strain their relationship. It’s interesting to see where this news may take Andy. It would be terrible to push Andy over the edge so perhaps this news will make her make amends with those still around in her life she feels estranged from.
Another character gains a lot of ground in their development as Travis’ backstory is explored a bit more. His relationship with Michael was not well received by his parents which caused them to find distance between each other. They weren’t supportive of their son being publicly gay and while Travis’ mom tried to fix their relationship he has been quite reluctant.
That was until he was talking to a woman on the phone whose car is trapped and her leg is broken. The search and rescue team he sends cannot find her and they have to abandon the search forcing Travis to talk to the woman over the phone giving her peace of mind until she dies. This epiphany-inducing moment causes Travis to feel a little more open to reconnecting with at least one of his parents.
And of course Jack’s stupid decisions came back to haunt him as Vasquez learned about the affair and took out his anger on Jack’s face. That’s a little bit of an easy punishment considering what he did. The last big moment was the birth of Dean and JJ’s daughter which wasn’t born in the most conventional place, but Dean seems pretty set on being the best father he can be.
This bottled episode where the firefighters are stuck with civilians in the firehouse allows for some growth that pushes these characters beyond their comfort zones. Travis has to face his past demons, Dean has to man up and Jack has to do both. Andy faces another crossroad and Sullivan continues down a bad slope. If anything, this blizzard should give many of the firefighters a push in the right direction to steer them off the icy paths they have been barreling down.
