Quarantining can get kind of boring, but it is definitely for the best. All of us here at KLM are sending our best wishes to everyone and hoping that our current pandemic state ends soon but safely. You may be finding yourself bored, lonely or perhaps even out of movies to watch. But fear not! Each day we will be presenting you with 10 different movies of a certain genre to keep your brain flowing and your letterboxd growing! (to read any of our previous lists, click here)

Here are our top 10 horror films to keep you company while in isolation! (Click each title to find out how you can stream our picks)

10. Tusk (2014)

Perfectly balanced between disturbing imagery and Kevin Smith’s slick writing, Tusk is a wild ride. Following a young podcaster who travels to the great white north of Canada to do some interviews, things start to get real weird real quick. Tusk is definitely one you should avoid all trailers for as going in completely unaware will make for a much better experience. This is a great choice for those who aren’t fans of intense jump scares as the film relies more on it’s imagery and subject matter to create those spooks. But the best part of it all? Johnny Depp playing a Quebecois.

9. Terrifier (2016)

Although this is the most low budget B-Movie you’ll find on this list, Terrifier will not disappoint. Equally graphic as it is scary, this one is sure to have you sleeping with one eye open. The film follows a maniacal clown named Art who terrorizes three young women and everyone else who stands in his way on Halloween night. With an exceptionally terrifying performance from David Howard Thorton as Art the clown and an extremely grindhouse-y feel, Terrifier is not for the faint of heart or those uncomfortable with extreme amounts of gore and other graphic settings. However, if you’re a fan of graphically twisted horror movies, consider yourself lucky!

8. In Fabric (2018)

In Fabric premiered at TIFF back in 2018 followed by a limited release late 2019, becoming one of my favorite films of 2019. In Fabric is a haunting ghost story set against the backdrop of a busy winter sales period in a department store, following the life of a cursed dress as it passes from person to person, with devastating consequences. Filled with amazing imagery, sound effects, and exceptional performances all around, this one is as weird as it is beautiful. Be prepared to feel discomforted and gray for days to come after viewing as In Fabric will be sure to get under your skin.

7. Mom & Dad (2017)

Finding an excellent balance between insane action and horror, Mom and Dad holds nothing back, giving a super fun time. In a suburban community, moms and dads, one after the other, mysteriously feel the irresistible impulse to attack and kill their own offspring. Where Mom and Dad truly excels is with its performances, especially Nicholas Cage in the lead role as “Dad”. If that doesn’t give you a rough idea of how the film plays out then I’m not sure what will. What’s great about Mom and Dad is that it can generally be viewed by average horror viewers without any traumatizing damage. It’s insanity is almost laughable at some points in the best of ways.

6. Climax (2018)

Do you have any limits when it comes to horror? If so scroll down to #5 as this will have no chance with you. But if you’re looking to really twist your mind Climax is indeed for you. The film follows young dancers who gather in a remote and empty school building to rehearse on a cold and wintry night. The all-night celebration soon turns into a hallucinatory nightmare when they learn that their sangria is laced with LSD. For starters, the film is directed by Gaspar Noé. Which should automatically give you an idea of what to expect. Although it is not your generic jump scare horror film, this will indeed scare you, scar you and disturb you in all the ways a film could possibly do so. However, at the same time you are bound to be in awe by the films insanely talented cast, the cinematography and everything else in between that makes the film so beautifully horrific.

5. Would You Rather (2012)

Would You Rather has a very straightforward plot to say the least, but nevertheless it is still an extremely fun time that will have you squirming in your seat. Desperate to help her ailing brother, a young woman agrees to compete in a deadly game of “Would You Rather”, hosted by a sadistic aristocrat. With an extremely well created atmosphere and all around good performances, Would You Rather is an entertaining great time that shouldn’t be missed.

4. Halloween (2007)

Hot take: I believe that Rob Zombie’s 2007 rendition of the Halloween series is the best film to come out of the entire catalog. What makes it so unique is how “no-limits”it is. Extremely violent, sexualy graphic and profance Halloween (2007) stops at nothing to give viewers the entire Micheal Myers story right from the beginning of our antagonist’s childhood. What Zombie manages to capture here is the true insanity behind this character making for an extremely disturbing slasher film that regardless is still a hell of a fun time.

3. Funny Games (2007)

A shot for shot remake of the 1997 critically acclaimed horror thriller, Funny Games is equally scary as it is disturbing and witty. When Ann, husband George, and son Georgie arrive at their holiday home they are visited by a pair of polite and seemingly pleasant young men. Armed with deceptively sweet smiles and some golf clubs, they proceed to terrorize and torture the tight-knit clan, giving them until the next day to survive. With great performances from Naomi Watts and Tim Roth and some excellent fourth-wall breaking, Funny Games will not disappoint in the slightest!

2. The Belko Experiment (2017)

Insane, fun and brutal. Those are the three best words to explain The Belko Experiment follows a group of eighty American workers who are locked in their office and ordered by an unknown voice to participate in a twisted game. Filled with intensity, great horror violence and great performances from John Gallagher Jr. and Adria Ajorna, The Belko Experiment is a great popcorn film that will leave your jaw dropped and your head exploding from its fast paced “fun’.

1. The Purge Franchise (2013-2018)

My favorite horror franchise is The Purge series. Sure it’s had its ups and downs but regardless, all the films are still a fun time. On top of that, with our current state of society this franchise fits in perfectly with the madness which are going through right now. The film series revolves around the concept that for one night a year all crime including murder is legal and each film follows a different group of people attempting to survive this crazy night. Perhaps watching them in their chronological order or 2018’s prequel The First Purge than the others will create different opinions on the series but rest assured, however you watch them, you are sure to have a great time!

On behalf of all of the KLM team, I wish you all the best in this situation we are in, but rest assured we will still provide you with all we can! Stay Safe!
