The Good Doctor (3×20) I Love You Review

I’m not crying, you’re crying. This was a tough season finale of The Good Doctor for not only the characters but also for us viewers as it saw them in tough situations that did not always end with the best results.

I Love You of course continued with the aftermath of the brewery earthquake. Melendez woke up in an ambulance unaware of what had happened while Reznick, fragile hands and all performed surgery on her patient (but would later be stopped by Andrews who then finished), and Park and Lim tried to save the boy trapped underneath the bar named Casey (but they couldn’t save him so Park decided to stay by his side). Meanwhile, the rescue team didn’t seem to be in a rush to tend to Murphy and Vera (Marin Ireland), the woman he was trapped with in an area that was filling with water fast (he first idea was to cut the rebar that was impaling her leg).

Melendez was not taking Browne’s treatment seriously though confusion on his part suggested that there may be something more going on. He was bleeding internally. Once Lim returned to the hospital, she was taken aback by the Melendez news. Once they opened him up, it was a lot worse than they once thought as his bowel was damaged. Murphy and Vera talked about Lea and love as a distraction from what was happening to them (she thought he deserved love and should move on from her and moving on wasn’t giving up). As cutting the rebar wasn’t working, of course the water had to come faster. Meanwhile, Casey wasn’t ready to accept that he was going to die and his father was still a long way away (Park tried to use his fatherly powers to console him as he atoned).

Lea was still around the brewery and growing restless with Murphy still in danger (he was not willing to leave without saving his patient). Instead of cutting through the rebar, he would have to cut through Vera’s leg. However, she did not consent unless he promised that he’d move on from Lea if she didn’t make it (he promised). As Murphy cut through Vera’s leg and the water was still coming in (Murphy wasn’t ready to give up), Lea listened on the radio (counting to 180 or 3 minutes to distract her). Meanwhile, Melendez opened up to Browne (he wasn’t afraid to die) and Andrews changed his mind on Reznick (in a long-winded way). Andrews was proud of what Reznick did but it would also put an end to her career as a surgeon.

Eventually, Lim had to come to terms with the fact that there was nothing more she can do to help Melendez which was not easy to do as he did the same (the sequence of them together was sad). He and Glassman’s goodbye was equally as emotional (Melendez was the best doctor he’s ever worked with). Browne and Melendez’s goodbye led to the moment we’ve all been waiting for but unfortunately it was too late (she told him she loved him which he kind of already knew). As Lea got to 180, the room had completely filled with water, When it looked like everyone was ready to move on, there were indeed signs of life (Murphy and Vera, minus part of her leg, were saved). Meanwhile, Casey finally succumb to his injury.

Melendez passed away as Lim and Browne looked on (it was a shame that more characters couldn’t be there). Park’s experience with Casey convinced him that he should be closer to his family. As Murphy exited the brewery, Lea was there. She wanted to tell him how much she was wrong (Murphy promised Vera he’d move on if she died but she didn’t) and kissed him which led to the episode ending with them kissing.

Melendez is gone, Park is gone, and Reznick is presumably gone but at least Murphy and Lea are together. It’s going to be a different series come Season 4.
