We're Not Getting Away with It was a rather anticlimactic midseason premiere that helped bring us back after the long layoff and nothing more.

Synopsis: Annalise’s disappearance is uncovered; following Asher’s death, Michaela and Connor are charged with murder and must make the most difficult decision of their lives; Bonnie reveals a secret about Tegan; Gabriel becomes a potential murder suspect. (TV Guide)

After nearly 5 months, How to Get Away With Murder returns with a whimper of an episode. While the midseason finale back in November left audiences with quite a lot to unpack, this midseason premiere reset the status quo thus planting seeds for the remaining five episodes of the series. It looked like some lingering questions would be answered but unfortunately that didn’t really happen here. Though it did do a decent job at bringing us back in after the long layoff, hopefully things will pickup soon.

We’re Not Getting Away with It started by tying together many of the flashforwards from the first half of the season as Annalise getting ready to leave (for Mexico) was intercut with Connor and Michaela being processed at the police station. Meanwhile, Frank and Bonnie were catching up on what happened while Oliver wanted help finding Annalise. He was at the police station and told them about Asher. Connor’s panic attack came after he saw a picture of Asher’s dead body while his mom made a scene at the station (he claimed he wasn’t faking and wanted to go to the hospital but the FBI did not allow it). As Frank tried to get Oliver to leave, he confessed to murdering Asher. Now keep in mind that they were all still under the influence of mushrooms.

Bonnie confronted Tegan about Annalise (she helped Laurel hide because she got blackmailed) but she didn’t know anything about Annalise. The FBI questioned Gabriel who claimed to know nothing about Asher’s murder (remember that they’re neighbors). Flashing back, Asher showed up at Bonnie’s (he was trying to record her saying some incriminating). She called Frank to drive him home. Going back to the present, Frank tried to comfort Conner’s mom but she wanted nothing to do with him. She wanted someone independent from Annalise to represent her son. Meanwhile, Bonnie represented Oliver while Solomon got Michaela a lawyer. The security cam footage from their house that could have proved all their innocence was conveniently erased.

Back in the past, Asher tried to get Frank to say something incriminating on tape (but would be unsuccessful). Frank offered to walk him back to his room (so he can snoop around for something that wasn’t shown to us). In the present, Frank questioned Nate who wanted nothing to do with him. He didn’t know Annalise was gone. During Connor, Michaela, and Oliver’s bail hearing, Chloe made a scene but in the end, the first two were denied bail and the charges against Oliver were dropped. Meanwhile, Frank confronted Tegan who didn’t offer much.

The FBI offered Connor and Michaela immunity for Asher’s murder and five year sentences for all their crimes in exchange for pleading guilty and testifying against Annalise. However, they both saw the lack of evidence against them and called them out for it. Solomon and Oliver thought they should accept their deals. While it was unclear what they did. Unbeknownst to the other, they each signed in exchange for the same protection for the other even if they didn’t sign resulting in all their charges being dropped. Meanwhile, Nate wasn’t done after all. He wanted to do what was right (but that didn’t include turning himself in for killing Miller).

Back to Annalise in Mexico, she continued to follow more cryptic instruction. Back in the past, Asher knocked on Gabriel’s door and asked to borrow his phone for which he refused (until Asher offered his $64,000 cheque for which he still had in the present). The episode would end with Annalise refusing to get into a car (seemingly being spooked by whoever was driving) and getting arrested by the Mexican police.

Could have sworn that Asher’s murderer would’ve been revealed here but we’ll have to wait. Looks like Annalise’s escape didn’t last all that long though there will surely be more there. Maybe she didn’t fake her death after all. Wes showed up at her funeral so he’s around and so is Laurel so it will be interesting to see how they figure in. Things better pick up.
