Under the Gun brings another mundane week of TV cliches and underwritten characters.

Nolan and Harper arrive at the hospital where Grace has a patient who has been shot, but is blaming it on a stomach ache. The suspect blames it on the first man he sees who happens to be Grace’s husband. Nolan quickly stops the perp from running, but with everyone back together you could cut the tension with a cold butter knife. Here’s what went down in “Under the Gun.”

For this week, Nolan and Harper are tasked with taking a group of juvie kids to a prison hoping to scare them straight. This storyline is what you’d expect from two cops visiting a prison of volatile inmates, even some with ties to them. It causes things to escalate and forces them and the kids to flee from the prisoners. Then things turn absurd when they decided to re-enter the prison without any backup, but hey this is drama TV.

And this wasn’t even the worst part of Nolan’s day as he learns that Grace is still with her husband and doesn’t seem ready to call it quits. He contemplates whether getting back together is the right choice to help their troubled son and Grace is considering it. While this is obviously the wrong choice, it causes drama so I expect it to happen.

Meanwhile, Bradford is dealing with a big step in his own relationship. Rachel is moving to New York for work and Bradford is considering transferring to the NYPD to continue their relationship. The only complication is that he’d have to start in the academy. He gets some sage advice from Chen who says that he is an LA man and this is where he should be. (Perhaps she has her own ulterior motives as well?)

And the minor storyline this week again goes to Lopez and West who are the subjects of a dating algorithm that is trying to predict police activity. This of course backfires and an active shooter situation occurs leading to a forgettable subplot for again another underused character.

Captain’s Log

  • How long will Tim and Rachel last?
  • Will we see more of Bradford and Cujo?
  • How will Wes deal with his issues?
  • Does Armstrong have a secret he is hiding?
