Rating Summary
Military Wives is as powerful as it is emotional in its depiction of a shared experience creating inspiration for others.

Sacrifice takes on many forms. For many, it is easily seen through soldiers who devote their lives in the service of protecting and serving their country. But what of their families?

Military Wives tells the story of a group of women who support their significant others while they are off to war and the challenges of maintaining the closest thing to a normal life back home as possible. As they search for an outlet to channel all of their energy and emotion, they form a choir that evolves into a beautiful form of expression. At the heart of this choir, are a pair of women named Kate and Lisa. Kate, a Colonel’s wife who is still struggling with the loss of her son in combat, is the perfect depiction of what a military wife is expected to be while Kate could not be more opposite. Despite their differences, the choir helps bring them together in order to aid those involved to share in expressing all of what they are experiencing through song. It is a feel-good story that is straightforward but is bolstered in its delivery by a good script and strong acting.

Thomas as Kate and Horgan as Lisa help lead a cast of British actresses that are truly fantastic. Each personality shines as they bring their own various stories of why they joined and how they cope whenever their soldiers are called abroad to life. The script, while inspired by true events, provides a narrative that is never in jeopardy of presenting twists or dramatic turns but instead allows for its cast to deliver strong and steady performances that cause the viewer to become immediately emotionally invested. While Military Wives is a drama that chooses to focus on the hardship of service and sacrifice, it balances dramatic moments with comedic moments exceptionally well. The best example of this was during the choir’s first public performance which experienced several distractions to say the least.

At the end of the day, Military Wives is an excellent feel-good film that will not only uplift but inspire. More importantly, it couldn’t have arrived at a better time considering the current climate. Its story not only highlights those that have committed to sacrifice beyond the call of duty but offers a universally understood feeling that suffering through service can take on many forms. It is through this lens that we are shown the beauty of a group coming together working for a common goal and channeling those emotions into something wonderful and positive.

Military Wives is an excellent watch for whom on its surface might not appeal to most viewers at least right away but if given the chance, the film will find a way to speak to you.
