Box Office Breakdown (August 7-9)

Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend.

Unfortunately, since most theatres are still closed down due to the COVID-19 and will continue to be for a while, we are unable to analyze the box office as studios are not reporting weekend projections. Due to this situation, studios are  releasing their films exclusively on VOD, allowing audiences to watch them within the comfort of their own home. Theatres are beginning to open back up in certain areas with restrictions in place, but studios are waiting a few weeks before releasing major films. In the meantime, we are dedicating this segment to analyzing how each film fares on VOD and Streaming.

The latest adaptation of the classic novel The Secret Garden was initially supposed to be released on April 3rd, 2020, but was pushed back due to COVID-19. The film was finally given a VOD release this past weekend and opened to generally lacklustre reviews, with many critics claiming that the film is a relatively bland retelling of a very familiar story. Despite the lack of enthusiasm from critics, the film’s timeless story and Collin Firth’s starpower are drawing in general audiences, as the film is currently positioned at #4 on the iTunes Charts.

Made in Italy was the other major VOD release from this past weekend. The film is a comedy starring Liam Neeson as an English artist who travels to Tuscany, Italy with his estranged son (Michael Richardson) to sell the house they inherited from his late wife. The film marks the directorial debut of actor James D’Arcy, who also wrote the script. The film has received relatively mixed reviews, but is doing quite well financially, as it is currently holding the #3 spot on the iTunes Charts.

Aside from VOD releases, HBO premiered Seth Rogan’s latest film, titled An American Pickle. The film stars Rogan as a Jewish immigrant who gets preserved in a box of pickles and wakes up in modern day New York City, attempting to fit in with the assistance of his last remaining descendant. The film has received generally positive, but unenthusiastic reviews from critics and is currently holding a 73% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes.

As of recent, the Digital Entertainment Group have been putting together a weekly chart listing the films/TV series’ that have generated the most sales domestically across all VOD platforms, as well as BluRay/DVD sales. Instead of following the iTunes Charts, we will be referring to the DEG charts from now on in this section of the Box Office Breakdown segment.
