Damage from the Inside was exactly that as plans were formed and sides were taken in a decent episode that started to tie things together.

Synopsis: When Dakota goes missing, Strand sends Alicia and Charlie on a search and rescue mission to find her; an unlikely ally provides a new possibility of escape from Virginia. (IMDb)

The streak of somewhat compelling episodes with little semblance of a link to any overall storyline continues with this one or at least until the reveal at the end. As expected, Morgan is sure to play a major role in whatever happens.

Damage from the Inside began with Strand and Dakota being escorted to a particular destination. However, trouble struck as the spraypainters presumably created a distraction to lure Strand and another ranger away while they killed the remainder of their convoy and kidnapped Dakota (she fled the attack but it’s safe to assume she was kidnapped). Meanwhile, Alicia was getting cozy in a watch tower with Charlie for the past 6 weeks. Perhaps still upset, Alicia kept ignoring Strand on the radio. He wanted help to find Dakota but Alicia was still skeptical of his motives (moving up the ladder was part of his master plan). She wanted to look into this other group for help against Virginia and the rangers.

Alicia searched an abandoned hunting lodge that showed signs of life as she found a man named Ed (Raphael Sbarge) who was experimenting on a walker (but he was really setting it up as a trap among his other augmented walkers which inevitably went as well as one would expect). After he tranquilized her, she woke up bound to the same table but freed herself rather easily. Ed and Dakota in fact found each other after she escaped and now she didn’t want to leave (Virginia allegedly killed their parents). Alicia was still on edge and rightfully so. Charlie followed her in though the lodge’s doors and windows were not boarded up. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Alicia got on the radio with Virginia to trade Dakota for her and Charlie’s freedom.

In his deluded mind, Ed just wanted to protect Dakota because he couldn’t do it before. He attracted a horde of walkers to the lodge. Their escape attempt looked to fail until Alicia got the upper hand, impaling Ed. However, the ensuing noise further attracted the walkers to the lodge. Ed’s augmented walkers eventually stormed the lodge and took care of him before leaving for some reason. That reason was Morgan who has consistently shown up at the right place at the right time. Now the issue was what to do with Dakota. Morgan believed that she could be used as leverage to get the others back (he also attacked the convoy but not Tank Town). This was almost a dealbreaker for Alicia until Morgan agreed to allow Dakota to come to his sanctuary with the others.

Things got tense once Strand showed up at the lodge but cooler heads prevailed though he made sure they knew the consequences for what they were about to do. Virginia certainly wasn’t happy to hear about what happened (Strand claimed to be on her side). She was adamant about getting everyone back and that plan somehow involved a very pregnant Grace who Virginia had held captive all this time. It seems like a trade of all the others for Grace is in the cards.
