The Wolves Are Always Out for Blood returns with an underwhelming conclusion to its fall finale that proves the confusing nature of its story choices.

Synopsis: Jenny and Cassie officially team up to track down Ronald. Merilee struggles with the fact she didn’t truly know her husband. Helen learns about her son’s deeds. (IMDb)

*Spoiler Alert*

Rather than a time jump past the Legarski shooting and rescuing the three hostages, Big Sky decides to go right back to where it left off and show the moments after December’s cliffhanger. With this a number of questions have been raised for the back half of this season. Will Legarski survive his gunshot?  When will Jenny and Cassie find Cody’s truck? How long does Ronald have and what is his insurance plan? Well, the series wastes no time answering some of those questions!

Moments after the shooting, Cassie arrives at the scene looking for any information concerning her ex-husband. Unfortunately, the Sheriff has a location on the truck and they are able to recover it along with Cody’s body. This causes both women to be hit with grief, both displaying it in equally powerful ways. At the memorial service, Jenny and Cassie are able to connect again through their grief and eventually Cassie agrees to take Cody’s spot at their PI practice to take down Legarski and Ronald.

Kudos to Kylie Bunbury through this episode as she continues to be on edge after the shooting. Every moment looks like she could lose it, on the verge of a panic attack. The struggle to keep sane after such a traumatic event is a necessary route for this character to take rather than play it off as just another day. Bunbury helps to sell this beautifully and brings a glimmer of hope to an otherwise bloated narrative.

Elsewhere, Legarski has been rushed to the hospital because apparently he is somehow still alive. Ronald and his mother start freaking out about how this could be tied back to him and so he decides to call up Merilee. Unfortunately, she doesn’t have much information for him and he continues to panic about what to do. He knows the girls can pin him to the kidnapping and the news says they are looking for a trucker. So he decides to repaint his vehicle and change the license plates and decides the next step is to break into Legarski’s and take any info connecting him to the crimes.

And Jerrie, finally free, is walking home when she is stopped by a man she used to know, Jimmy. He seems worried about her, but she appears off-put by him in some way creating a weird dynamic between them. When she returns home, there’s a note on her door that reads “You don’t learn,” the same quote that Ronald said to her in captivity. And of course the episode ends on a cliffhanger with this one being a comatose Legarski having his finger twitch, his heart rate rising and eventually an eye opening. Where does this series go from here? Not really sure anyone knows at this point.

Detective’s Report

  • Where does the season go from here?
  • Will Legarski remember anything?
  • What will happen to Ronald? Will his interest in Jerrie be his downfall?
