When you’re trying and reimagine this classic 90’s video game, a few things need to be checked off the list. Tons of gore, check, dope and unique character designs, check, clean and good fight choreography, check and finally Scorpion yelling out his famous words “Get Over Here” check. If you add all of those things up you get a fun and badass new look at the Mortal Kombat movie hitting theatres soon and dropping on HBO Max.

This isn’t going to be the Citizen Kane of video game movies, I’m sure the script will be stale and the plot might be a little over the top, but for what fans want from a true adaptation of this property, this trailer kind of had it all.

If you were going to tell me that I was going to see Jax get his arms broken off by Sub Zero today I would have said, not a chance. But, here we are and all the major players are here, except one noticeable exception who could be introduced in the film’s stinger, more on that at the end.

A little more grittier and grounded, we see our heroes are police officers this time around and they have been dealing with a few “super-powered” beings. Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee) and Jax (Mehcad Brooks) are trying to figure out what it all means. Enter Cole Young (Lewis Tan) the only new character added for the movie who is the key and stepping stone to getting into the Mortal Kombat tournament.

We also get a glimpse at Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Kabal (Daniel Nelson), Kano (Josh Lawson), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Kung Lao (Max Huang), Mileena (Sisi Stringer), Shang Tsung (Chin Han), Sub Zero (Joe Taslim), and most importantly Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada). I’m sure more surprises are awaiting us, but it appears that everyone will get their chance to fight, and it sure seems like no one will be holding back and punches. The gore is through the roof in this trailer and you really don’t and can’t have it any other way.

This looks like a ton of fun and something fans have wanted for a long time.
