We're All Crazy Sometimes is a compelling yet uneven episode that saw two big cases play second fiddle to some big character moments.

Synopsis: After bringing in a complicated spinal surgery, Dr. Aaron Glassman challenges the residents for an opportunity to join him in the operating room; Shaun and Morgan disagree on how to treat a comatose patient with a cancerous tumor. (IMDb)

So Glassman has a new thing and so do Murphy and Lea in this sort of game-changing yet uneven latest episode of The Good Doctor.

We’re All Crazy Sometimes started with Murphy and Lea arguing about why she deserved a raise after single-handedly saving the hospital though she was a little more modest about it. She could take care of herself but when they caught her car getting towed, Lea wanted some backup but Murphy failed to deliver and that resentment kind of carried over through the remainder of the episode plus a subplot about her getting revenge on the tow truck driver.

Back at the hospital, the cases included a young man and baseball prodigy named Jeff (Michael Taylor) with a complex spine deformity that Glassman took a particular interest in though Andrews questioned his motivation in taking on a case that many others have deemed impossible. Meanwhile, Murphy and Reznick argued on how to treat a comatose woman named Danny (Elizabeth Mitchell) as one was clearly more hopeful than the other. A twitch suggested more than what was really there while a cancerous tumour threatened to kill her.

Jeff’s surgery was over before it started as he refused to undergo the surgery as he was adverse to the risks and just wasn’t ready. Glassman gave him a pep talk about not giving up after having gone so far and to not be afraid to live his life (the other doctors talking about their fears became a thing) while telling him that he was going to struggle at being a person just like the rest of us. Danny’s surgery unexpectedly brought her out of her coma for the first time in 10 years and that influx of emotion was a sight. However, this instance was only temporary as the release of dopamine from the ruptured tumour was not going to last and it put the doctors in an awkward position where Danny could either fall back into a coma or die. That news did not go down well as the chain of events that caused this were unlikely to happen again. It was an emotional time so Reznick put the decision on what to do next on Danny while she was still lucid. She signed a DNR and that goodbye was a tough one.

Park missing out on Glassman’s surgical team proved to be a lesson for him. The actual surgery faced some complications with Jeff’s heart. His contorted body was not letting the doctors operate but Glassman was not ready to give up. The moment when Jeff stood up for the first time and hugged him made it all worth it.

The episode ended with a few odds and ends, perhaps none bigger than Murphy and Lea pulling a fast one on the tow truck driver and Wolke eating a cheeseburger thus severing the last connection he had with his mother and his upbringing and Browne performing in front of people (her mother taught her how to play guitar). Andrews was thankfully proven wrong and gave Glassman some potential new cases (hopefully a thread for Richard Schiff’s Glassman that continues in the near future). Ultimately, the one that topped them all was the news that Lea was pregnant which why she had been acting so erratically lately.

That last bombshell is a big one that is sure to complicate things on multiple levels. The emotion wasn’t consistently there but these new developments are sure to keep thing interesting if not for the time being.
