Pond Hockey was a compelling episode that saw the team take to a pond to come together as Emilio Estevez shined once again as Gordon Bombay.

The run of making what was old new again continues in this episode, following the appearance of the old Ducks. All of this was inevitable as the series was setting up to this moment but nevertheless, the Gordon Bombay era has begun and it was indeed glorious to watch.

It is pretty clear what an episode titled Pond Hockey is alluding to as it was the location where Evan and the Don’t Bothers would make up which in turn brought the team closer together while it was also where Bombay asserted himself as the new assistant (but really the head) coach of the Don’t Bothers. Following Alex’s idea of a team meeting for them to hash out their issues, Bombay cut the power to the Ice Palace (which was revealed later) to force them to a pond. Meanwhile with Bombay’s rise, Alex had to learn how to separate her position as a mother from that of a coach as her methods seemed to hold the team back.

The time on the pond, while short, was wholesome to watch as Bombay strut his stuff as a coach, adapting his methods for today. In the end, it worked. The team was having so much fun together that they forgot about their issues with Evan and Evan stepped down as the captain of the team. However, Evan’s relationship with Sofi needed some more work after his efforts to pluck her from the Ducks. Sam (De’Jon Watts) also needed some convincing.

When it came to the Don’t Bothers’ latest game, the team came together and as far as Bombay was concerned, Alex was the coach. The team played well and even won at the buzzer thanks to a play she devised as she finally embraced her position as the coach and it was also glorious to watch.

The team was always going to rise and that journey has been fun to watch so far. They are positioned to face the Ducks and it will definitely be a great game. We also don’t appreciate Emilio Estevez enough.
