Synopsis: Alicia is held prisoner by Teddy; there, she reunites with old friends and must confront her past if she hopes to move on and escape. (TV Guide)

Teddy’s plan is revealed in this episode if it even is one considering the character we’re dealing with because he crazy. Nevertheless, the Teddy and Alicia dynamic carried the episode as he took her for a ride while characters from her past were shoehorned in as a means to prove his point. Alycia Debnam-Carey was a stoic force.

Mother began with Teddy in prison during what appeared to be the early stages of the zombie apocalypse and his “the end is the beginning” mantra. His time in prison was abruptly interrupted by the zombie apocalypse showing up at the prison which only seemed to lend credence to his beliefs.

Back in the present, Alicia was stuck listening to a loop of recordings of Teddy and it looked like they were getting to her. Teddy’s group was moving to a new location for the next stage of their plans. The others were growing restless with her lack of cooperation. Nevertheless, Teddy believed in taking the time to better know Alicia in the hopes of converting her to his cause. Dakota, a new recruit, was also invited by Teddy to join he and Alicia. Her goal was to help Alicia but convincing her would prove to be easier said than done.

Teddy took Alicia and Dakota to see the grave of his mother (Alicia reminded him of his mother and the similarities became increasingly clear as the episode went on), taking her body to be part of his new beginning in his new home in his new world (the three lost mothers). An accident and a group of subsequent walkers derailed their journey but Cole showed up to save the day. That group from the stadium was still around. Dakota and Teddy bonded over their indiscretions while Alicia and Cole plotted on their way to what was a trap under the guise of help by the same group. They found a different way that helped them survive.

Despite the circumstances, Teddy belief in Alicia and his cause was yet to waiver. This new group was ultimately interested in where Teddy’s new hideout was. In the end, Teddy’s plan was to find proof that the people Madison saved were dead, however, they only found them alive which only proved his point more (the body they took earlier was not Teddy’s mother). Cole offered to take Alicia with his people but she refused, wanting to investigate Teddy further. As a result, he had to kill her and the others. Walkers interrupted just in time. An insult to her mother’s sacrifice, Alicia killed Cole much to the delight of Teddy.

Teddy’s plan was to use those aforementioned keys to launch missiles out of a beached submarine (his people did not know his plan). He luckily got Dakota on his side just in time as she stopped Alicia from trying to kill him which was also exactly what he wanted (not before she started to deliver a message to Strand). That apparently made her the right person for what was to come (she was the beginning in “the end is the beginning” and would be tasked to rebuild the world from inside a bunker).

Does Teddy even know what he’s doing because he doesn’t know Alicia as well as he thinks he does? What will it all lead up to? Who knows?
