Like father like son. When Ivan Reitman directed Ghostbusters almost 40 years ago, I don’t think he ever envisioned his son would pick up the proton pack mantle and direct his own sequel someday. This latest trailer of Ghostbusters: Afterlife has everything you would want. It’s respecting what has previously been built while exploring new roads and new ideas all while making it seem directly related to the original material.
Instead of some 30 something-year-olds battling ghosts in New York City, Ghostbusters: Afterlife gives us a coming-of-age story, that seems like a neat and interesting spin. Jason Reitman is practically dedicating this film to the late Harold Ramis by making him the focal point of the entire story. We have his family moving into what they think is a small town in the middle of nowhere and into this old beaten-down home. Unbeknownst to Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (McKenna Grace) is that their Uncle (Egon) was an all-time ghost ass-kicker. So when they start to put the pieces together of his legendary past, it’s up to them and a few of their trusty side-kick friends to help save the world yet again.
One aspect that everyone is very excited about is obviously the cameos of the people who built this franchise from the ground up. We get a peek at one with Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz), who played the world’s greatest secretary. But, the moment that is bound to give every fan goosebumps is when none other than Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd) picks up the phone at the very end of the trailer. The cameos seem like a natural part of the story and seem to flow very nicely within the context of the movie. Not forced and it will only help drive the movie forward, something you would want with a movie like this.
We get to see the new team in action a little bit more, but the best part about the trailers that have arrived so far is the lack of action they have been showing. Not a whole lot of ghost-busting has been shown and I think that’s wonderful. This is about more than just that and the movie is clearly about more than that. We do get to see Echo 1 back in action with a few cool new upgrades at hand and honestly hearing the sirens go with the car, will put a smile on anyone’s face.
It seems fun, inventive but close to home. Which all leads to a successful sequel. Time will tell!
