The season 2 premiere of The Legend of Vox Machina establishes a larger ambition in narrative and scale, offering a welcome return for fans.

The following is a spoiler-free review of the first three episodes of season 2 of The Legend of Vox Machina, premiering this Friday on Prime Video

At almost exactly a year since its inaugural release and after one of the most successful Kickstarter fundraising campaigns on record, Critical Role’s ever-popular The Legend of Vox Machina returns for another season. Continuing to follow its eclectic heroes that make up the titular coalition and range from twin elves, a druid, a half-giant, a bard, a priest, and more, the second season of Vox Machina picks up immediately after the closing events of its first where the land of Taldore is saved from a rampant evil only to see besieged by a group of dragons flying towards them in the horizon.

Fans of the series will immediately fall into a welcomed familiarity as these first three episodes unfold, complete with the humor, action set-pieces, and drama that made season one incredibly successful, but newcomers can also jump right in with ease as this season manages to attract through increases in the overall production value of each episode, engrossing narratives that shift the focus more inward toward the group’s dynamics and backstories which help create an added layer of emotional investment that subtlety builds into the overarching narrative.

In the end, one thing is certain and that is that there was no spared expense when it came to increasing the scope and scale of this second season. Each episode contains something truly epic that is exciting as the story builds. Within the first episode, this is made abundantly clear through a large-scale battle that quickly establishes the epic tone of this season. The heroes are faced with the dilemma of resting on their previous laurels after having saved their realm by receding into a peaceful life in another town living off of their earned fame or remaining together and seeking a way of bringing the newly inserted evil to justice.

Overall, the first three episodes of The Legend of Vox Machina make quick use of establishing a much larger ambition in narrative, character development, and scale, offering a welcome return for returning fans of the series but also an ability to attract potential new fans as well. This season is the immediate beneficiary of having countless hours/years of being developed through its original voice cast and finally translating that love and cultivation onscreen is still incredible to witness and grows with each episode.
