Rating Summary
Only two years removed from the successful 2021 film adaptation of the popular children’s show, Paw Patrol, there was a clear indication that more were on the way. Needless to say, Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie finds itself with the odd challenge of matching or exceeding its predecessor, a task which it largely accomplishes in parts, but still offers a fairly mundane plot, albeit, with some spectacular additions to the pups who always find a way to save the day.
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie centers around a magical meteor crashing in Adventure City which provides each member of the Paw Patrol special abilities. With powers like super-strength, lightning speed, morphing into water, and more, the Paw Patrol’s ability to help Adventure City is expanded along with their foe’s desire to acquire their newly found powers. Fans of the program have come to expect typical hijinks from former Mayor Humdinger (Ron Pardo), but there is also a new addition to the villains of Adventure City through not-so-mad-but-also-slightly-mad scientist, Victoria Vance, who is voiced by Taraji P. Henson who sounds like she’s having a blast in the role. Unbeknownst to the Patrol, it’s Vance’s machines that draw the meteor to Earth along with multiple others that will require the pups to destroy.
While this serves as the main plotline for the film, a similarly important secondary plotline centers around Patrol member Skye (Mckenna Grace) who is struggling with her size in comparison to the other pups who are growing up more quickly. Viewers of the previous film will immediately recognize this narrative necessity as a similar storyline was handled with Chase (Christian Convery) and his fear of going back to Adventure City. Skye’s dilemma is one that is hammered hard in the early moments of the film and resolved relatively well by the final act. More importantly, it serves as a solid break from the formulaic villain story to offer something more meaningful in the film’s overall message.
Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie will be catering to a specific audience on its opening weekend and will eventually cement its status among the ample streaming options within its genre. But for those who are fans of this show, or more specifically, parents of the fans of this show, there is a lot within this film to enjoy and appreciate. While the film doesn’t reinvent the formula, it instead finds a way to make it work for itself by instilling a positive message amongst some truly entertaining action sequences.
