Synopsis: Heroes and villains reckon with the aftermath of the Hilltop fire; Eugene takes a group on a journey to meet Stephanie, with the hopes of befriending another civilization. (IMDb)
Now that we’ve gotten Michonne out of the way, time to get back to reality and another meandering episode that does just enough to get by. Pretty much the formula of the series.
Let’s go back once more to figure out how Negan’s deal with Carol came to be. Despite the risk to him if he failed, Carol believed in Negan and if he were to be successful, she would make sure he would be remembered for what he did now and not what he did then. Now that Negan finally did the deed, he was ready to go back to Alexandria. However, Carol wasn’t ready for him to come back and needed time for herself first. Negan was free but what to do? Meanwhile, the whispers now know of Alpha’s passing and that Negan probably had something to do with it (but Beta was definitely not ready to become the new Alpha and don’t call him Alpha). Beta took Alpha’s head from one of the spikes at the border. He thought she was still talking to him so he began to wander around seemingly at her behest.
Daryl quickly found Negan (who was looking for Lydia) and Negan told him the truth but it would take a lot more to convince him (especially because of all the time it took which was an issue apparently). A few whispers were waiting as Negan and Daryl headed to the border (so Daryl can see the head on the spike). The head not being there certainly did not help, however, since Negan killed Alpha, some considered him to be the new Alpha (which he thought was hilarious). While he did like being charge, he saved Daryl. Though Alpha may no longer be alive, her spirit still found a way to haunt (or troll) Carol because obviously. She struck a chord by bringing up the past. The point was to convince Carol she was like Alpha though it wasn’t working. Meanwhile, Beta used to be a country singer. His playing an old record of his of course triggered a group of walkers. Beta saw them as his audience (even taking off part of his mask).
Carol eventually found herself in trouble as the roof of a shed collapsed on her, leaving her trapped as a walker approached and Alpha was trolling her. Of course she escaped but it was admittedly close. Meanwhile, Negan and Daryl were waiting for her. Negan opened up about how he felt about his time in the cell and what it felt like to be accepted by the whispers, being respected and valued, though Alpha took it too far. Daryl left Negan to open the Alexandria door to Carol (strongly implying that he let Negan back in).
The remnants of Hilltop were still hanging around. Eugene told the others about his new radio friend, a woman named Stephanie. While the others were unsurprisingly skeptical and suspicious, Ezekiel defended him. Eugene’s hope and loneliness was enough to plead his case. As a result, Eugene, Yumiko, and Ezekiel (his cancer was getting worse) set out for this meeting with Stephanie. As things got worse, Ezekiel regretted joining and wanted to be left behind if something were to happen. Their journey took them to the ruins of a city full of dressed up (like normal people) and chained up walkers, leading to their discovery of an enthusiastic woman.
The episode ended with Beta coming to a realization (and took part of Alpha’s face for his new mask), leading the herd of walkers outside the bar where he was presumably as the new Alpha.
With Beta becoming the new big bad, that’s something to look forward to I guess but this season looks to stumble towards the end once again that will unfortunately be one episode short this time around with the last episode being pulled from this season (to later be aired as a special) due to coronavirus.
