Killing Eve (3×07) Beautiful Monster Review

Synopsis: Carolyn is frustrated with the lack of progress in the investigation; Eve is focused on Villanelle and finds a clue to her whereabouts; Villanelle and Dasha work together on a kill; the pressure is getting to Konstantin. (TV Guide)

Now that was an entertaining penultimate episode of this season of Killing Eve, reminiscent of the early seasons and perhaps the best outside of the Villanelle-centered episode a few weeks back. The seeds are planted in terms of a possible future but it’s unclear where next week’s finale will go. Either way, it will be an exciting one.

Beautiful Monster began with Villanelle and Helene. She was introduced to Rhian (Alexandra Roach), another protege assassin of the twelve. Helene was checking up on her (in a peculiar way). She had some recent bagage but of course Villanelle wasn’t exactly forthcoming. She wanted to work though her injury made Helene reticent so Villanelle offered to kill Dasha. Meanwhile, Mo was unable to find any evidence of Paul working for the twelve (covering his tracks with normal white people stuff) which left Carolyn frustrated. Eve bothered her further with Villanelle news (Carolyn offered her work back at the Russian prison which she refused). Her promotion was their best way in. In the end, Carolyn gave Eve a reality check.

In Russia, Irina had been detained for running over her mother’s boyfriend. Konstantin’s attempt to bribe her out failed. Irina clearly had issues which was why she was kept for observation. She appeared to be having fun. Either way, Konstantin had to leave her to go back to London. There, he was greeted by another character hiding in the dark (a fun running gag). Geraldine confronted him and laid into him as he admitted to using her to get to Carolyn. Meanwhile, Eve pursued her only lead on Villanelle which was the cake she sent her (dumpster diving to do so). The Bitter Pill may have been raided by the authorities but that didn’t stop her and Bear. They found a credit card whose last purchase was in Aberdeen, Scotland which Villanelle and Dasha were.

Villanelle and Dasha continued their fun banter and mind games but their trip to Scotland was an elaborate ruse so Villanelle could take out Dasha (and make fun of Americans). Ultimately, Villanelle swung at Dasha with a golf club which failed before leaving the scene and joining Konstantin. Eve caught up (thanks to a chatty cab driver) to a vulnerable Dasha who continued to troll Eve who in turn stepped on to her ribs until she got spooked by the authorities. Meanwhile, Mo left a message for Carolyn about finding some evidence on Paul though the appearance of Rhian on a nearby park bench foreshadowed his demise which would later be confirmed.

At a train station in Aberdeen, Konstantin vented his many anxieties to Villanelle until he appeared to suffer a heart attack. Villanelle didn’t want him to die but the important thing was his money so she was sure to try and get it first. Once again, Eve caught up to them in time for Konstantin to point out Villanelle riding away on a leaving train (they waved to each other which was nice). Meanwhile, Geraldine noticed Carolyn was acting strangely. She was just repressing another death of someone close to her. Geraldine pressed her on her lack of emotion so Carolyn lashed out.

At the hospital, Konstantin just happened to be in a room with Dasha (him laughing when asked if was experiencing any stress and her laughing about the fact that they were in a room together was hilarious). In the end, the episode ended with Villanelle calling Eve.

Eve and Villanelle were always going to find themselves together by the end. They are no closer in taking down the twelve but maybe we’ll figure out why Kenny died. The other character subplots have been fun this season so hopefully the season finale will stick the landing and do them justice.
