The Gotham Awards nominations are officially in, kicking off the 2024 awards season. Over the years, the Gothams have earned a reputation as the unofficial starting point for awards season, being the first major body to reveal its nominees. While they don’t always align with the Oscars, the Gotham Awards reliably predict trends for the Independent Spirit Awards and often serve as a launchpad for indie films to gain momentum.
Sean Baker’s Anora is the clear frontrunner this year, leading with four nominations, the most of any film this year. Anora has dominated the awards conversation thus far, and it shows no signs of slowing down. As a highly regarded filmmaker and an advocate for independent filmmaking, Baker’s work resonates deeply within the indie film community. Given the Gotham Awards’ mission to celebrate independent cinema, recognizing Anora would be a fitting tribute to Sean Baker’s significant contributions to the field.
Nickel Boys also landed a nomination for Best Feature, positioning itself as a strong contender in the awards race. With the potential to become an awards season fixture, success at the Gothams and other early precursors will be essential in maintaining momentum heading toward the Oscars. Meanwhile, Babygirl and A Different Man—both films with acting prospects for the Academy Awards—secured spots in the Best Feature category. Shockingly, Sebastian Stan was not nominated in Outstanding Lead Performance for A Different Man. The biggest surprise, however, was the inclusion of Challengers, which earned no other nominations.
On the flip side, A Real Pain, Sing Sing, and I Saw the TV Glow—all heavily predicted to contend for Best Feature—fell short of expectations. The Brutalist was another disappointment, not only missing a spot in the top category but also failing to earn a Supporting Performance nomination for Felicity Jones.
