Brave to Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger for kicking it up a notch this week with an intriguing and riveting episode. While it’s not exactly mindblowing, it takes the story to the next level as Tandy and Tyrone enter Ivan’s mind and learn what happened the night of the oil rig explosion.

When the episode begins, there is a flashback to young Mina and Ivan, and Ivan rushing to the oil rig. We hear him mention he needs to speak to Nathan Bowen just as the power on the rig turns off.

In the present, Tandy and Tyrone head off to the hospital to visit Ivan because Tandy wants Tyrone’s help to push through Ivan’s mind. She is referring to a door she needs to enter through but isn’t able to, and when both of them touch Ivan’s arm, they are immediately transported into a vision.

When approaching the door, both Tandy and Ty find themselves transported to the oil rig. As soon as they arrive at this vision, they realize that people can see and hear them, and are attacked by one of the workers.

Things get weirder and more complicated when they find Ivan sitting at a desk rambling about being halfway there and that the power needs to be shut down to the rig so there isn’t an explosion. However, when time runs out the scene is essentially rewinded back to the beginning where they first met Ivan.

It appears that Ivan has been in this alternate reality, and can’t even recall his daughter’s existence. He does seem to remember Tandy’s father and we learn that the person that her dad was talking to the night of the explosion was Ivan. Just then the phone rings and Tandy picks it up to hear her father’s voice on the other end. The explosion happens once again and disrupts the call, and takes them back to the beginning.

Ty realizes in order to prevent the explosion the valves have to be shut off, but before he can do so, he is approached by the workers and teleports himself somewhere on the rig. When Ty steps out of Ivan’s mind after another reset, he realizes that Tandy is not with him because she is talking to her father on the phone. She wants to be in this other reality because she gets to be with her father and refuses to leave it.

Ty grows frustrated with Tandy and pushes her to understand she needs to leave this reality, and the two find themselves getting into a physical altercation over it. To prove she isn’t actually talking to her father, Ty tells Tandy to ask her father who is sitting in the backseat of the car and when he replies no, her reality is shattered because it is not really her father she is speaking to.

Tandy manages to snap herself out of it, and in the process Ivan as well as she pushes him to remember his daughter. When he finally does, he breaks down over her memory and wants to see her. Together, the three manage to turn off the valves so the explosion can’t happen again, and they can get out of this alternate reality.

Mina and Ivan reunite after Ivan wakes up from his cathartic coma, and sees his daughter. When Ty and Tandy return home later that night, Ty calls to talk to her as he looks through a box of old pictures. He finds a voice recorder that Billy once recorded something on. Together with Tandy, the both of them listen to what is on it.

This was an enjoyable episode this week because it finally gave some depth to the story as we understood a deeper meaning behind Tandy’s father’s death. The oil rig explosion is a big part of Tandy’s life and seeing them get into Ivan’s head helped us understand the mystery of it all. It seems like Tandy and Ty are starting to get closer which can only mean love is just around the corner.

Score: 7.5/10
