Its the most wonderful time of the year – awards season! The Golden Globe nominations are soon to be upon us, as well as the Oscars, Critics Choice and many others! As the worldwide community of cinephiles prepares to be outraged and validated as their favorite movies are picked and snubbed, we should take a moment to realize that there is one thing that brings all fans of film together – we’re all very confident in our opinions. Now it’s time for the big categories, the ones that are reserved for the end of the night, when people put down the champagne and pay a bit more attention. Here are our official predictions for the directing, acting, and best picture categories of the 2018 award season.
*Golden Globes specific predictions
Best Director
Who Will Get Nominated
– Bradley Cooper – A Star is Born (A Star Is Born is a stunningly directed film that cannot be ignored, and it will be very unlikely that the Academy will chose to ignore this impressive debut)
– Ryan Coogler – Black Panther (Black Panther was a passion project, it shines in that regard, and the passion is obviously focused from Coogler. Based on this, he has a very good chance at a nomination)
– Damien Chazelle – First Man (Another stunning outing from Chazelle, proving he’s not a one trick pony. Basically a lock)
– Barry Jenkins – If Beale Street Can Talk (Things are shaping up to be a follow up to the 2016 showdown of Chazelle and Jenkins, as the latter yet again created a cinematic marvel with his newest outing, and will surely be recognized for his efforts)
– Alfonso Cuaron – Roma (The man’s won two Oscars already and with Roma looking as promising as it does, he’ll likely be in contention for another one)
Who Could Get Nominated
– Yorgos Lanthimos – The Favourite (If anything, The Favourite seems very specifically directed. If it clicks with voters, this could earn Lanthimos a nomination)
– Steve McQueen – Widows (After directing a Best Picture winning film, best director doesn’t seem like that far of a stretch)
Who Should Get Nominated
– Bo Burnham – Eighth Grade (Throughout these lists, Eighth Grade has been a special case. Although it may not get much attention, it has something important to say and the more awards exposure it gets, the more seriously people will take it, and its messages. Burnham had the guts to put this out there, and created an authentic feeling and excellently executed film and for that, he should be nominated.)
