Synopsis: Rue get depressed and binge-watches 22 episodes of a British reality show; Jules visits an old friend; Cassie looks for advice to help her deal with the fallout of Halloween night. (IMDb)
This extra-long titled episode of Euphoria definitely had a lot going for it, resulting in the best episode of the series thus far as a lucid Rue is now seeing clearly and attempts to connect everything that’s been going on in a very Rue way (as she will clearly be the key to everything) while also struggling with her bladder (and also depression) in a funny and also sad way. The other subplots were also winners as well though they were arguably more on the back burner this week.
The Trials and Tribulations of Trying to Pee While Depressed started with Rue narrating a backstory for Cassie, from living in a dysfunctional home with her sister Lexi. She had dreams of becoming a professional figure skater but that did not work out, just like her parents’ marriage (and her father leaving them) which would be a contentious point for her, to growing up into the person she was today. Meanwhile, Rue was feeling depressed since the Halloween party so she found herself bundled up and binging Love Island (the UK one) while not going to the washroom (and also doing some very deep thinking about herself). Jules was also feeling unwell (because of getting drunk at the Halloween party and an unsavory encounter with Nate).
Looking for the truth about everything, Rue and Lexi were on the case, as the episode became a retro cop drama. Rue was very intense and couldn’t sleep. She thought Jules was in love with Nate (which we know to not be the case). Rue believed she was experiencing a manic state, suggesting bipolar disorder. Meanwhile, After the Halloween party, Cassie was now pregnant and did not know what to do. She also wasn’t sure how to tell McKay about kissing Daniel at the party. The consensus amongst the girlfriend roundtable seemed to be to not do it (Kat rightfully called out Maddy on her personality but got upset after Maddy struck back). Cassie implied that there was more going on but she kept that to herself.
Rue’s mom got herself a new boyfriend named Rick (Nat Faxon) which she of course didn’t like but things got worse when she learned that Jules was spending the weekend with one of her friends from her old high school. She then went to Fezco to share her many suspicions, eventually leading to her asking him to threaten Nate for her as a way to get revenge. Meanwhile, she had to wait in his patient’s room while he was meeting his supplier. The pill bottles nearby were calling out to Rue but she resisted them. From there, her depression only worsened. On the other hand, Jules was having fun with her other friends to take her mind off everything (which would not last much longer).
Cassie shared the news with McKay who was clearly not thrilled with what the responsibility would mean for his life. Kat had a strange experience with one of her online clients. Fezco ultimately stood up for Rue and Jules and tried to threaten Nate when he showed up at his convenience store but Nate didn’t really seem all that threatened by him. Meanwhile, Rue struggled on her way to the restroom while Jules was high and at a club. This sequence with the cinematography, lighting, and editing were excellent as she appeared to hallucinate Nate who was also there. They confronted each other before sleeping together (but he was really one of Jules’ friends who had feelings for her and also Rue).
Nate reported his encounter with Fezco to the police which brought them back to him which forced he and Ashtray to frantically dump all their merchandise as they were knocking on his door. Meanwhile, Cassie asked her mom for help while Rue’s mom helped her. The last shot was of Jules alone on the rooftop, texting Rue that she missed her.
Hopefully when Nate gets what he deserves next week, it will be glorious but the odds of that happening aren’t very high at the moment.
