There is perhaps no celebrity more unique than Jeff Golblum thanks to his eccentrically-dynamic personality and different perspective on life that he has gained throughout his illustrious career. What better way for him to show this off than to give him his own series? Disney+ and National Geographic have done exactly that by giving him his own 30 minute documentary series entitled The World According to Jeff Goldblum in which he stars and narrates his own adventures as he tests out his highly inquisitive mind, analyzing seemingly everyday items in a deeper way that only he can. Immersed in their worlds, he finds connections and shares backstories that we may or may not have been aware of while also looking at them on a scientific and historical level as well as their overall impact.
Suffice it to say that The World According to Jeff Goldblum will not convert non-fans. Those turned off by Goldblum might not enjoy this docuseries as much as it is definitely catered to his dynamic personality and his fingerprints are felt throughout. It is fun to watch not only because of his infectious sense of wonder as he genuinely cares about the items he’s exploring but also the sheer unpredictability of his personality. In each episode, Goldblum has fun, insightful encounters with people (he is definitely a man of the people) related to the item focused on in each episode, all who are united by their shared appreciation including (via Disney):
Innovators and Makers – from world-famous industry giants to pioneering mavericks and scientists, these are the people who have transformed the object into a cultural force and are seeking to push its boundaries ever further.
Passionate Obsessives – from intrepid treasure hunters to internet superstars, these people have taken their love of the object to a whole new level , and who better to soak up their infectious enthusiasm than Jeff?
Subcultures – from guardians of ancient traditions to communities finding strength through unity, these people have a connection to the subject that’s far from obvious at first glance , but with the help of Jeff’s lateral mind, we open doors to hidden worlds and new perspectives.
Over the course of each episode of The World According to Jeff Goldblum, Goldblum discovers the story behind each item and how it’s made, the item’s impact in our lives, and some secrets that we may not be aware of about the item and takes a look at its future. The first four episodes screened for this review focused on the world of sneakers, ice cream, tattoos, and denim and were definitely eye-opening and they seemed to be for Goldblum as well as they saw him taking part in some unique experiences in pursuit of his curiosity. In the end, it was certainly entertaining to learn right along with him.
At the end of the day, The World According to Jeff Goldblum looks to be an entertaining and informative docuseries and it will be exciting to see where it will go as it tackles such items as BBQ, Gaming, Bikes, RVs, Coffee, Pools, Cosmetics and Jewelry over its final 8 episodes of its first season which will be added to the service every Friday.
*Sneakers and Ice Cream will be available Week 1 of launch*
