With License to Elongate, the Flash pays homage to James Bond but doesn't quite entertain as we would hope.

Synopsis: Barry turns his attention to prepping Elongated Man for life after Crisis and without the Flash; Cecile faces her own moment of self-discovery while helping a recuperated Chester P. Runk reclaim his identity. (IMDb)

With the upcoming Crisis, Barry Allen has a lot on his mind. This episode was conflicting because while there are entertaining moments, it just fell flat. Other reviews raved about the episode, but this just wasn’t the case for this reviewer. All season, Barry has been trying to help Team Flash come to terms with the Crisis. Especially because he believes he will die during it, he wants to make sure they’re ready.

License to Elongate focused on Ralph as he traveled with Barry to Midway City where they attended a black-tie party. This is where the James Bond references come in and make for a rather entertaining banter between the two.

It’s funny because Ralph takes charge of the episode while Barry tries to get comfortable with being at a fancy party. It’s funny to see him so awkward and out of place, but it still doesn’t manage to save the episode.

It turns out Ralph wanted to attend the party to get a lead on the Sue Dearbon case, but Barry completely messes that up. Against Ralph’s advice, Barry gets into his Flash attire and sets off metahuman detectors. Come on Barry, listen to other people for once!

This situation ends up with Ralph and Barry getting captured, but there’s an important lesson to be learned here, as Ralph points out. Sometimes Barry gives so much credit to the Flash that he forgets he’s important as well. This conversation is the best part of the whole episode because it puts things into perspective for Barry.

At the end of the day, Barry and Ralph get out of this crazy situation, which took a while to happen, but it finally did. Later on at the CCPD, the Flash presents Elongated Man to the media. Joe and Ralph decide to surprise Barry by presenting him with an award for all the amazing work he’s done.

In other parts of the episode, Nash works alongside Allegra to get through the secret area in the tunnel where the Monitor supposedly is. Oh, and he also accidentally tells her that Barry Allen and the Flash are one and the same. Not sure where that will take us, but the cat’s out of the bag.

And that’s about the gist of the episode. It just needed more, so much more. But hey, at least the episode was funny. Right?
