The firefighters are all dealing with their own issues. Dean is figuring out how to be a single father, Sullivan is managing to throw away his drugs and Travis cannot seem to face his latest boytoy Emmett. Bailey has an update on Vasquez, he’s stable and in the ICU thanks to Ben’s work in the field. But things are not cooling down just yet. Here’s what happened in “Born to Run.”
The first major story of this episode is surrounding Dean and his newfound single fatherhood. Dean names his new daughter Prue, but not struggles with the thought of giving her up for adoption. He cannot fathom doing the parenting thing alone and he obviously has no help from his parents. Thankfully, Pruitt is there to give him some advice on taking care of his namesake. Flashbacks show their relationship and what sent Dean to the firehouse in the first place. Luckily he will have some help at home with his new roommate Victoria.
Meanwhile the inevitable happened. After Sullivan and Andy have both endured their struggles, they finally hooked up and gave into their feelings. Funny how this happened an episode after Andy rejected Sullivan. It is good that it is happening now and not a few episodes ago as Sullivan continues to deal with his drug addiction. He even goes as far as speaking with Amelia Shepherd at Grey Sloan who is a recovering addict herself. This is a great moment for his character even if it was expected.
The other firefighters are responding to a multi-victim call that gets to thrown Emmett into more uncomfortable situations. His lack of experience and the nepotism of his hiring is showing as he really cannot do anything right. Maya struggles with this and eventually breaks down to Carina about this issues. She feels constantly at ends with her team and it is taking its toll on her.
And of course Bailey and Ben face the decision on whether to report Sullivan or not. He knows that relaying this information will close the Physician Response Unit, but this episode proves the usefulness of this team. He knows that despite the repurcussions that Sullivan needs to be reported to protect the lives of anyone he is entrusted with.
