Various firefighters place money in a boot for the Vasquez family. The A team sits down to talk about their “critical-incident stress debriefing.” They all him and haw at the thought of having to go through that. They get interrupted when the B team comes in to make food and say they will filet Gibson if they have to. Sounds like they’ve totally forgiven him right? Here’s what happened in “Something About What Happens When We Talk.”

This self-contained bottle episode has the various characters talking to firefighter therapist Diane to help them all work through the grief and pain of losing Vasquez. First up is of course Jack. He is a brick wall when it comes to emotions and does not want to open up to Diane. She talks about her past and the worst experiences she has gone through. This causes him to talk about the family he wanted, but never got. The foster siblings he lost. Then he relates it to a call where a lone woman was losing her Christmas tree and made him think of being utterly alone for the rest of his life. Quite the bottled up emotions there Jack.

Second in the chair was Andy who has just as much, if not more, to unpack to the resident therapist. She goes on about being upset at Jack, pissed off at Maya, angry at Sullivan for his choice and of course we all know the underlying animosity towards her dad. This causes Andy to open up about her feelings toward Sullivan and Diane tries to relate this connection to her upbringing. Looking for a strong male figure in the firehouse similar to her dad? That is some deep stuff right there. Diane of course has to switch the conversation over to Vasquez, but Andy did not have much interaction with him. This was more about her unpacking something for herself to hear out loud.

Next up was Travis, who took over cooking duties for Vasquez’ widow when B team was called away. Diane decides to talk to him about his sexuality and ask about his bravery for being openly gay in this profession. They swap stories about what got them both into firefighting explaining the hero complex that Travis has and the continued strength he shows in the face of adversity. As Diane pulls at the seams, Travis starts to crack and blames his emotions on Vasquez’ death. This is followed by Ben and Diane having an interesting discussion on faith, medicine and how these aspects are forever intertwined. This brings up an old memory of Ben’s where he was pulled over and forced to the ground, but his reaction to this situation showed his true righteous colors.

The final conversation is with Dean and Victoria as they discuss their current living situation, their failed relationships and Dean’s lack of any close family. Diane manages to get them to talk about their feelings to one another and she believes there is more than meets the eye between these roommates. The day of therapy ends with Diane getting through to the very strong-willed Maya. She opens up about thinking about dying since she was 12 as a form of escape. She is even jealous of Vasquez. This prompts her to make the smart decision to take a few days off with Carina and get away with her. Hopefully all of these firefighters learn from these very emotional sessions.
