Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend.

Unfortunately, since most theatres are still closed down due to the COVID-19 and will continue to be for a while, we are unable to analyze the box office as studios are not reporting weekend projections. Due to this situation, studios are  releasing their films exclusively on VOD, allowing audiences to watch them within the comfort of their own home. While theatres are temporarily shut down for an indefinite amount of time, we are dedicating this segment to analyzing how each film fares on VOD.

This past weekend was very slow in regards to new releases. The most high profile VOD release was Human Capital, a thriller with a buzz-worthy cast including Liev Schreiber, Marisa Tomei, Peter Sarsgaard, Maya Hawke and Alex Wolff. The film premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, receiving generally mixed reviews, with many critics praising the performances, but claiming that it’s relatively aimless. Despite the all-star cast, the film doesn’t seem to have attracted audiences as it is currently not charting on iTunes.

The other noteworthy new release was the Czechoslovakian black and white war-drama The Painted Bird, which may not be attracting general audiences, but has been gaining a considerable amount of attention within the film community. The film also premiered at the 2019 Toronto International Film Festival, receiving very strong reviews, with many critics praising the film’s unflinching portrayal of Nazi Germany during WWII.

As of recent, the Digital Entertainment Group have been putting together a weekly chart listing the films/TV series’ that have generated the most sales domestically across all VOD platforms, as well as BluRay/DVD sales. Instead of following the iTunes Charts, we will be referring to the DEG charts from now on in this section of the Box Office Breakdown segment.

In terms of news regarding upcoming films, Warner Bros. decided to delay Tenet indefinitely due to the concerns regarding COVID-19. Although many theatres are planning to open to audiences within the next few weeks, there are areas that are being impacted by the pandemic at the moment. Until the amount go cases begin to significantly decrease in all areas, its very possible that all major theatrical releases will be postponed.

In the coming weeks, we will continue to analyze the state of VOD releases and will provide updates regarding upcoming films.
