Synopsis: The future of Sullivan’s career hangs in the balance as his disciplinary hearing gets underway, and Ben, Dr. Richard Webber, Emmett Dixon and former Fire Chief Dixon are called to testify. (IMDb)
As the title aptly describes, this episode is all about family. Those we are born into and the ones we choose. This is seen through a multitude of minor developments throughout: the continued family dynamic with Jack, Inara and Marcus, the new living situation of Maya and Carina, the struggling friendship of Maya and Andy, the separation of Andy and Sullivan and the ongoing struggles of Travis with his father’s secret life. While all of these stories are ongoing, the focus of this episode lies in its two storylines.
The first is a call to an apartment building where an electrical fire turns into a small explosion. It is revealed that the majority of the residents are drag queens, led by RuPaul’s Shangela, which excites superfan Travis. As the explosion occurs, a visibly weak Dean from lack of food, is seriously injured.
Right when Station 19 looks like it might be shocking fans with its first death of the season, Victoria and Travis are able to save Dean and bring him to safety. En route to the hospital with the injured drag queen, Travis gets some advice from one of his drag icons. She tells him to stop looking for his tribe, because his team is his tribe.
This plays into the ideas of family as they tie into the main story of this episode: the trial of Robert Sullivan. As Emmett Dixon, Richard Webber and Ben all speak highly of Sullivan during the hearing, everything is undone by the former Chief Dixon who paints Sullivan in a completely different light. This causes PRT to be disbanded and Sullivan looks like he will be fired.
That is until the entire station returns and walks in to defend their Battalion Chief proving their loyalty and love for each other. This causes the jury to make their tough decision: Sullivan can continue being a part of the fire department, but he loses all rank and must start from the bottom. Maya accepts and Station 19 welcomes their newest rookie to the team.
