Agents of SHIELD (6×11) From the Ashes Review

So this long, drawn-out way to presumably bring Coulson back from the dead is almost over. In this episode, we learn more about who he really is and how he was created. Daisy confronts her trauma. Finally, everything (including a surprising amount of elements from last season) are starting to come together for next week’s 2 episode finale. It will definitely be interesting to see how this sets up the final season.

From the Ashes started with Yo-Yo and Mack on the zephyr. Izel has presumably left them at this point or at least that’s what it seemed like but she pretended to be Mack in order to get information from Yo-Yo about the temples where the monoliths were supposed to go. Benson was most likely to know anything and now Izel knew. Meanwhile at the base, the others were frantically looking for the zephyr while Fitz and Simmons were trying to find a way (with Deke chipping in to feel smart) to combat Izel’s ability and also figure out who or what Sarge really was. May, who was interrogating Sarge, was adamant in her belief (despite all the evidence that suggested otherwise) that she could get Sarge, who may or may not possess Coulson’s memories, to remember them (which would prove to be tough).

On the zephyr, Benson returned to give Mack and Yo-Yo a lesson on what he learned (all while Yo-Yo knew that Mack was Izel). Luckily, Benson suspected that something wasn’t right (and Mack/Izel sensed it). Izel decided to show herself but he was unwilling to give her what she wanted. Mack and Yo-Yo tired to iron out their relationship issues while Izel used the gravitonium sphere on Benson to create his greatest fear, a man named Thomas (Robb Derringer) who he killed in a car accident. Meanwhile on the base, Daisy was trying to tap into Sarge’s powers and reveal who he really was. Fitz and Simmons were getting nowhere (and Simmons confronted Daisy on her issues with walking away from traumas). Daisy took Simmons words to heart and another crack at Sarge, opening up to what he may be but also quaking him to draw out his powers (and it seemed to be working).

On the zephyr, Benson struggled with his fear and it was working in Izel’s favor. Benson gave her the coordinates she needed but once they had the chance, Mack and Yo-Yo helped Benson escape so he can presumably tell the others (though it was probably too late since it didn’t seem to faze Izel all that much). On the base, we saw a glimpse of Sarge’s creation. Sarge wanted to leave but Daisy was adamant that he show who he was and he definitely did, using his powers to subdue her and escape. Daisy wanted him to escape so she could test Sarge’s sword (and also get over her issues). As soon as she confronted Sarge, she was taken aback after he called her Skye. Coulson’s memories were indeed coming back and Sarge wanted her to kill him before he lost control of his growing powers. Daisy couldn’t kill him anymore (Clark Gregg and Chloe Bennet were great here).

The others made it to the temple Izel was looking for to unleash the gravitonium sphere and create a portal to her world. On the base, Deke came up with a way to combat Izel using different frequencies. Daisy was becoming more open on the idea of Sarge and where he could fit on the team. Meanwhile, they also found Benson’s containment pod and were up to speed on what was happening. However, Izel did not have everything she needed to perform her ritual as the monoliths were destroyed. She would need the unwilling Mack and Yo-Yo to rebuild them for her. Maybe a confused Flint (who appeared out of nowhere) can help.

The last scene saw the Chromicons arguing about whether to save their planet or colonizing a new one (presumably Earth) where Atarah lost to Malachi with her life. Time for a showdown at the temple in next week’s season finale.
