Batwoman is here to stay, folks! After two episodes of figuring out how she is going to tell Gotham that Batman is indeed gone, Kate Kane finally and truly becomes Batwoman–red wig and all.
There was a lot going on in this episode, and while some of it felt a bit cheesy and over-the-top, the ending was worth the minor speed bumps along the way. After all the drama with Alice, Jacob is eager to keep his family safe so he assigns Sophie as Mary’s bodyguard. A bit annoyed and frustrated, she deals with it despite the fact that Kate doesn’t have one.
It’s clear that Kate’s return has Sophie confused beyond belief. You can see old feelings emerging to the surface. It’s only a matter of time before she acts upon it, but it may be too little, too late. And I’ll tell you why.
This week’s episode introduced a new character, Bruce Wayne’s best friend/archnemesis Tommy Elliot. Apparently, he’s pretty sure that Bruce is Batman, and he wants Batman dead, despite the fact that he saved Tommy’s mother’s life. This is the opposite of what Tommy had wanted because instead of getting his inheritance, he had to take care of his mother. Yikes, talk about petty!
This leads us to a break-in at Wayne’s Research and Development facility, where someone stole a gun with bullets that could break through Batman’s suit. It’s pretty obvious Tommy is behind this. But more on that in a bit.
Tommy throws an incredible party, and the entire Kane family (sans Alice/Beth) are in attendance. Kate runs into Sophie’s husband once again, who has no idea how his wife knows Kate. Looks like she never told him her love story and how she opted to stay back at the Academy, while Kate admitted her sexuality and left. Whatever Sophie’s drama and secrets are, however, it looks like Kate might have found someone to spend some time with–a cute bartender at the party.
While at the party, Jacob gets a phone call from Alice/Beth who has broken into the Kane penthouse. Not only did she kill a guard, but she starts playing the cello for Jacob to prove that she’s his daughter. I think she might be finally getting through, but that’s to be determined.
In order to get Tommy to reveal he had the gun, Kate lures him out with the gun by saying it had a tracker on it. Luckily, Luke has a way to render Tommy’s gun useless, but it requires Kate to stall a little bit. Whatever needs to happen, has to happen quickly as her entire family is stuck on elevators that Tommy is controlling.
Of course, it should be mentioned that with Gotham desperately seeking out Batman, Kate now feels a responsibility to confess that it’s not him, but someone else. It’s time for her to embrace the badass woman she is, and she does just that. Red wig and all, Kate turns into Batwoman for the world!
And it’s a good thing because she manages to somewhat save the day, with some unexpected help from Alice/Beth. What is going to happen between these two women? Clearly, Alice does not want to be called or remembered as Beth. But Kate can’t seem to let that go, at least not yet.
With her official debut as Batwoman, there are a lot of mysteries that need solving, particular the one surrounding her shady stepmother. Why did Alice leave behind those playing cards for Catherine? And why did she hide them before Jacob could see?
We have no idea, but hey, it looks like Kate just may have found a way to move on with Regan the bartender! And she’s Batwoman. Things just might be on the up and up.
