Batwoman (1×11) An Un-Birthday Present Review

Synopsis: On the Kane sisters’ birthday, Kate and Alice contend with demons from the past; an unexpected guest makes a surprise appearance in Gotham. (TVGuide)

In a now post-Crisis world, Batwoman is trying to make sense of what Gotham City has turned into. Things are more or less the same, but there are some differences, some big differences like a version of Beth that is kind, polite, loving, and really close to her sister Kate.

We met this post-Crisis version of Beth in last week’s episode, and this week, we are acquainted with who she is. This version of Beth was rescued by Kate during the car accident, and went on to become an astrophysicist. It’s a pretty startling difference from the Beth/Alice we know now.

Because of Crisis, this version of Beth landed on Earth-Prime, and as if that’s not scary enough, Kate didn’t even recognize her and ended up attacking her. Not exactly the type of thing you want to deal with, right?

In any case, Kate quickly fills this Beth in as to what happened during the Crisis and how she ended up on Earth-Prime. She doesn’t seem too shocked or scared by it, and takes it in stride. Of course, knowing that another version of herself saved Beth, Kate is riddled with guilt. She could have done the same in her reality and is beating herself up over why she didn’t.

Before she can spend too much time moping around, Kate learns that Mouse has kidnapped the mayor’s son, along with the commissioner’s son. In exchange for their freedom, Mouse wants Alice to be released. But to sweeten the deal on his end, he kidnaps Kate as well.

With Kate captured, it’s up to the rest of team Batwoman to figure things out. In an attempt to trick Mouse, Beth pretends to be Alice. Of course, she’s nothing like her villainous counterpart so her charade doesn’t last for too long.

Thankfully, Kate breaks out and saves Beth from being killed by Mouse. Mission redemption accomplished! But what about evil Alice? Well, she escapes before being shipped off to Arkham Asylum but doesn’t make it very far.

As it turns out, there can only be only Beth on this Earth. One must die, which is why in the final moments of the episode, evil Alice and sweetheart Beth keel over in pain. This is definitely going to be a weird predicament for Kate to ponder over.

Does she save the evil sister that she knew as a kid? Or does she save the version of her sister that’s kind and sweet? That is definitely going to be one hell of a decision.
