And just like that, we have officially kicked off the sixth season of The Flash. It’s a little baffling how it’s season 6 already, but here we are! This season is a very special one for fans of the Arrowverse as it marks the universe’s biggest crossover yet. This reviewer for one cannot wait for what’s to come, and the season 6 premiere of The Flash begins to set up the foundation for it.

Coming into this premiere, we’re reminded that Nora is longer around, and it is something Iris is having a very hard time dealing with. There will be another Nora one day, but it won’t be the one they spent time with. While it was nice to see this plot point included, it was good that we didn’t spend the entire episode focused on it. There was a lot more going on and this was just a part of it. The Flash often tends to laser focus on storylines that get real boring, real fast. Luckily, this was not one of them.

The episode jumps four months ahead after Iris and Barry lose Nora. Cisco is just now Cisco now. Vibe is out, and his girlfriend Kamila (Victoria park) is in. Guess who else is sort of back? A fake Godspeed, well, the fourth one according to Barry and Cisco. For some reason, there have been speechless Godspeeds zooming around Central City, and no one has any idea where they came from.

One of the best parts of the season 6 premiere was the party at Joe and Cecile’s house. For once, Team Flash wasn’t doing anything crazy and were just enjoying themselves. It’s so nice to see that dynamic thrown in there every once in a while.

Barry and Iris are really struggling with the loss of Nora, but there is a very different perspective on it here. The grief is a bit odd for them because they know they’ll see some version of their daughter once again. As a result, they’re just stuck because they miss and want the old Nora, but that’s not who they’ll have. And because of this, they aren’t even experiencing the grief of losing Nora properly.

This episode spent a lot of time around black holes and a character named Chester P. Runk (Brandon McKnight), a scientist whose consciousness is actually the black hole itself. Team Flash comes up with their craziest plan yet which will involve Barry running into the black hole and taking out the man’s consciousness. Then, he will put it into his suit using the technology they have from Nora and bring it back to S.T.A.R. Labs. Meanwhile, one of the standout moments of the episode was the use of Queen’s Flash Gordon theme in the background during that sequence. It was everything and easily one of the best parts of the season 6 premiere.

Other parts of the episode focused slightly on Caitlin and her friend, Dr. Ramsey Russo (Sendhil Ramamurthy), who is slowly but surely turning over to the dark side–literally. After injecting himself with dark matter, Russo is transformed into Flash villain, Bloodsport. Hello, villain of the season!

Last but not least, we got our first teaser of the upcoming Crisis crossover when the Monitor shows up telling Barry the Flash has to die. Well, that can’t happen–can it?
