Synopsis: There’s no time for the team to play catch-up when there’s a planet to save. (IMDb)
Perhaps expectations were set a little too high with this episode, Collision Course (Part II), being the conclusion of a two episode arc as it would end with a whimper and would be a little disappointing for the most part despite what happened in the final scene. Whatever the season-long arc has been so far is certainly not over yet though looks to be heading in a different direction. The end of the previous episode saw many of our favorite characters in danger but it would be silly to think that anything was ever going to happen to any of them and nothing did which would damper the episode if not slightly (if this episode was a season finale, for which it easily could have been, things may have gone differently).
Collision Course (Part II) started with Mack trying to find a different solution to their truck vs. ship problem. Mack also knew that there was something else going on (for which he would be right). Meanwhile, Sarge rounded up his team on the zephyr to get ready to take it over. On the ship, Fitz and Simmons were still working on the ship’s communication system. They also sensed that something wasn’t quite right while Izel sensed their sensing. She tried to reassure them that they would not face the same fate as she needed their intelligence. On the truck, Deke was worried about diffusing Sarge’s bomb but it would get too much for him.
Mack’s plan to intercept the truck with a quinjet was thwarted by Sarge who had taken over the bridge. Yo-Yo, who was about to get on the quinjet, noticed something was wrong and started working behind the scenes to stop them (she would create a distraction that would make them take down their force field long enough to slip Mack a set of handcuff keys). The truck finally crashed into the shrike tower, unleashing them, but Daisy used her powers to contain the bomb. Meanwhile, Izel sensed that her tower was destroyed and then suspected Fitz and Simmons of being partly responsible before deciding to pull away. Sarge was also mad about his bomb not exploding and wanted to go after her. It got worse for him when Mack starting creating distance between Sarge and Jaco.
On the truck, the gang were faced with a flock of shrike that began to attack it. On the ship, the communication system was finally online and was used by Fitz and Simmons to communicate with the zephyr. It became clear to them that something was going on once they heard Coulson’s voice. From there, Sarge and Izel took over and had a war of words (it is still unclear what they did to each other). Izel sensed that Fitz and Simmons recognized Sarge’s voice which only aggravated her suspicion of them. They then escaped. On the zephyr, Yo-Yo reminded Jaco what he was fighting for. Meanwhile, Mack took advantage of Sarge and took control of the bridge back.
On the truck, the gang prepared themselves for a final shrike surge that did not last long after they were all somehow vaporized. Meanwhile, Mack took a team (including Jaco and not Sarge) to Izel’s ship to extract Fitz and Simmons who they got back while Jaco had a shot at Izel who somehow disappeared. Using Jaco’s portal technology, they escaped the ship back to the truck where Deke was happy to see Fitz who had no idea who he was (which was admittedly hilarious to watch). Jaco then took the bomb back to the ship to sacrifice himself by destroying him and Izel’s ship.
The logical thing to do next was celebrate. Mack was looking forward to hearing Daisy’s space stories. May was second-guessing herself about her treatment of Sarge. Deke smothered Fitz by all his gloating but he did also want to spend time with them. He also went to console Snowflake who Daisy had locked up (she was a murderer but Deke thought she was jealous). Finally, Mack made an inspiring speech before sharing his feelings (which we all already knew) with Yo-Yo who shared the same feelings about him.
The last scene was of May confronting Sarge in his cell and opening fire on him and appearing to kill him.
This could have been the season finale so it will be interesting to see what happens over the final 4 episodes. Sarge is maybe dead and his team is disbanded, Izel is gone (for now) and the chronicom planet is still destroyed. Maybe this season will line up with what’s going on in the MCU (it couldn’t before because its premiere date was unclear while filming) or maybe set up the next season. Regardless of what it does, hopefully what has been a good season will end on a great note.
