Riverdale (4×06) Hereditary Review

Archie ups his vigilante game, Betty continues her own digging and Jughead starts his own investigation into the Baxter Brothers series. Riverdale is full of conspiracies and crazy stories so it’s a surprise that Quantico isn’t filled with this town’s youth. They seem to follow even the faintest of hunches to the right conclusions. Here’s what happened in “Hereditary.”

The detective behaviours of these high schoolers is the driving narrative of the series and Hereditary is no different. The Core Four deal with their own issues throughout the series and each of them are going down their own investigatory paths. From their secret family members to unknown pasts, the town of Riverdale seems to be the centre of everything terrible.

Archie tries with everything in his power to find proof of Dodger’s involvement in his business, but unfortunately nothing points back to him. He is visited by Hiram who offers a blank cheque and Archie is skeptical at first. Things get worse when Dodger interrupts a game night to reveal he knows Archie is the masked vigilante. He races home where his mom and him narrowly escape a drive-by shooting. Archie decides he needs to side with Hiram in order to protect his family and the community centre, but Hiram won’t conduct an act of violence. That doesn’t last long when Dodger’s nearly dead body is found thrown behind a dumpster. What a shocker!

Veronica, still reeling with the news of her estranged sister, sides with her mother after the trials. She gives her a waitressing job at La Bonne Nuit, but soon discovers that her parents spent a night together and they plan to renew their vows. This leads to Hermosa also moving into the house and becoming the centre of their father’s attention. All of this causes Veronica to reject this new life and wants nothing to do with them.

Jughead deals with a bout of writer’s block as he looks closely at his beloved Baxter Brothers books. He comes to the conclusion that the original book was written by his grandfather, but the author stole it and sent Forsythe away. He asks Mr. Dupont, but he obviously denies it so Jughead confronts Mr. Chipping with this information. Unfortunately, his teacher dives out the window of his office before Jughead can get answers. With no one to turn to, Jughead’s world gets a little worse when Mr. Dupont arrives to teach the remainder of their class.

Meanwhile, Betty finds herself unable to trust her brother Charles and decides to get some information from his old roommate Chic. Still upset by what the Coopers did to him, Chic informs the police that Alice killed someone which causes FP and Charles to cover it up. This causes Betty to finally trust her brother, but she shouldn’t be so quick. It is revealed that Charles and Chic are lovers and are secretly trying to destroy the Cooper family! What a ridiculous story!

Thankfully, this episode has a great subplot that follows the craziness surrounding Thistlehouse. Cheryl and Toni are still trying to deal with the Julian doll when some surprise Blossom relatives arrive. Aunt Cricket and Uncle Bedford have come for the Blossom family business and after finding Jason’s body they want to have Cheryl locked up. Luckily, Toni arrives and kills Uncle Bedford to save Cheryl only causing more problems for these love birds. This sort of campy, crazy murder is exactly where Riverdale shines!
