Awards Season 2020/2021 Roundup – Part 3

Tristan FrenchJanuary 2, 2021n/a118 min

2020 has been an eventful year for the film industry, as it has faced many significant changes. While most theatres were closed throughout the majority of the year and many highly anticipated releases were postponed, 2020 was a very solid year for film all things considering and there are still a handful of spectacular films that deserve awards recognition. Despite a shifted eligibility date, online guild screenings and a remote Oscars broadcast, awards season has quickly adapted to the new climate and fortunately remains mostly in tact. The staff here at keithlovesmovies are following awards season closely this year, by covering all of the major precursors. and frequently providing our updated Oscar predictions. This is part three of a regularly scheduled segment.

Los Angeles Film Critics Association – Winners

Along with the New York Film Critics Circle to an even larger degree, the LAFCA Awards are the pinnacle of critics group awards. The LAFCA’s awards are held to a higher standard and they are a slightly more influential precursor. Unlike the other awards circles, the LACFA only pick winners and runner up’s, as opposed to releasing a list of nominees. This year they decided to award the top prize to Small Axe, a group of films that are not eligible to compete at the Oscars. Outside of that, the winners are pretty similar to what other critic groups have been awarding. Nomadland cleaned up; Boseman, Mulligan and Youn Yuh-Jung once again cement themselves as strong players in their individual categories; Wolfwalkers once again defeats Soul and is becoming a serious threat in the Animated Feature category. However, what is new is that Glynn Turman was awarded Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom over Paul Raci in Sound of Metal (who’s been cleaning up everywhere else). Whether that’s a fluke or the beginning of a serious awards campaign is still up in the air.

Chicago Film Critics Association – Winners

Last week we briefly discussed the CFCA’s list of nominations, this week we’re going to take a look at the winners. Unsurprisingly, Nomadland took home the top prize, as well as Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for Chloé Zhao, Best Actress for Frances McDormand and Best Cinematography. The rest of the winners also followed closely with what other critics circles have been awarding. The CFCA award Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design which are two categories many critics circles don’t award. Emma took home Best Costume Design, cementing itself as a serious Oscar contender in that category, while The Invisible Man took home Best Visual Effects.

Florida Film Critics Circle – Winners

Last time we discussed the nominees announced by the Florida Film Critics Circle. This week we will be taking a look at the winners. While Nomadland has been taking home the top prize at the majority of Critics Circles Awards, First Cow popped out of nowhere once again and won. Outside of First Cow‘s surprise win, the FFCC made some interesting choices: Los Fuertes and You Don’t Know Me winning Best Foreign Language Film and Best Documentary in particular is very interesting and broadens the races in those categories

Indiana Film Journalists Association – Winners

The Indiana Film Journalists Associations announced their shortlist earlier month, but due to the sheer length of their list, we will only be discussing the winners. The majority of the winners line up with the previous Critics Circle Awards, with the exception of a few categories. Delroy Lindo took home Best Actor, Leslie Odom Jr. received some well deserved love for the “underperforming” One Night in Miami and Tenet destroyed Soul in the Best Original Score category.

While it doesn’t have as much of an impact on awards season as the New York Film Critics Circle, the GWNYFCA is still an organization to keep an eye on. Nomadland cleaned up in the major categories, while Minari, Soul and Sound of Metal continue to impress critics and build more awards buzz.
