Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend.
Unfortunately, since most theatres are still closed down due to the COVID-19 and will continue to be for a while, we are unable to analyze the box office as studios are not reporting weekend projections. Due to this situation, studios are prematurely pulling films from theatres and releasing them on VOD, allowing audiences to watch them within the comfort of their own home. While theatres are temporarily shut down for an indefinite amount of time, we are dedicating this segment to analyzing how each film fares on VOD.
This past weekend was relatively uneventful in terms of VOD releases. The most high profile release was The Trip to Greece, the fourth instalment in Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon’s highly acclaimed film adaptations of their BBC sitcom. In this instalment, Coogan and Brydon play fictionalized versions of themselves, as they travel to Greece to embark on a culinary journey. The film received strong reviews and has managed to secure a spot in the top 10 on the iTunes Charts.
Scoob continues its streak and has maintained its position in the top 3 on almost every major platform, including iTunes. Warner Bros. have not announced anything regarding the films revenue, so it is unclear how closely it is competing with Trolls World Tour.
While it may have been a relatively slow week for new releases on VOD, it was an entirely different story for streaming, as Netflix released the highly anticipated comedy The Lovebirds. Directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick) and starring Issa Rae and Kumail Nanjiani, the film follows as a couple who accidentally become involved in a murder mystery. Paramount Pictures was initially planning to release the film on April 3rd before selling the film to Netflix shortly after following the temporarily closure of theatres due to COVID-19. Shortly after being released, the film almost immediately claimed the #1 spot on Netflix, proving to be a big success.
Aside from new releases, we wanted to report which films have been generating the most sales on the iTunes Charts. Apple doesn’t release statistics or a weekly chart, so these are the top 10 films on iTunes based on the moment this article was being written:
10. Capone
9. Bloodshot
8. Sonic the Hedgehog
7. The Invisible Man
6. The Lodge
5. Bad Boys For Life
4. Emma
3. Bombshell
2. Scoob
1. A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood
In terms of upcoming releases, Edgar Wright’s highly anticipated horror film Last Night in Soho has been officially rescheduled to April 23rd, 2021.
In the coming weeks, we will continue to analyze the state of VOD releases and will provide updates regarding upcoming films.
