Awards Season 2020/2021 Roundup – Part 5

Tristan FrenchJanuary 20, 2021n/a122 min

2020 has been an eventful year for the film industry, as it has faced many significant changes. While most theatres were closed throughout the majority of the year and many highly anticipated releases were postponed, 2020 was a very solid year for film all things considering and there are still a handful of spectacular films that deserve awards recognition. Despite a shifted eligibility date, online guild screenings and a remote Oscars broadcast, awards season has quickly adapted to the new climate and fortunately remains mostly in tact. The staff here at keithlovesmovies are following awards season closely this year, by covering all of the major precursors. and frequently providing our updated Oscar predictions. This is part five of a regularly scheduled segment.

Chicago Indie Critics

A few weeks ago, we reported on the Chicago Indie Critics list of nominees. They have finally announced their winners, which are outlined in bold down below. Nomadland thrived once again, but it was Da 5 Bloods and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom that were the big winners. The latter in particular is looking to be a stronger competitor by the minute, as it pulled of wins in some major categories, including Adapted Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Ensemble and Best Studio Film. Da 5 Bloods got a major boost based on these results, as it took home Best Studio Film, Best Director and Best Supporting Actor. Boys State also received a major boost, as it beat heavyweights like Time and Dick Johnson is Dead

Oklahoma Film Critics Circle

Unlike most other film critic associations, The Oklahoma Film Critics Circle does not put together a list of nominees and only announces their winners. Minari was the big winner, as it took home the top prize, as well as best supporting actress for Yuh-Jung Youn. Outside of that, the other winners lined up with what has been dominating the previous critics circles. Nomadland, Soul, Mank, Sound of Metal, Boys State and The Trial of the Chicago 7 all did quite well, while Promising Young Woman and Da 5 Bloods were shut out entirely.

Columbus Film Critics Association

The Columbus Film Critics Association announced their nominees and winners, as well as their top 10 films of the year. Promising Young Woman won the top prize, as well as a few other major awards. The film once seemed like a dark horse in the Oscar race, but its beginning to solidify itself as a major contender. Nomadland and Sound of Metal also thrived, as both picked up quite a few awards. Dick Johnson is Dead picked up the award for Best Documentary, while Palm Springs got some attention as well.

Critics Choice Super Awards

The Critics Choice Super Awards are new awards that doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with the Oscar race, but I thought it would be necessary to at least mention. The Critics Choice Super Awards are made up of the same critics who vote on the Critics Choice Awards, but it focuses specifically on genre films, particularly highlighting films that usually get shut out of the Oscar race. While some of the films awarded are certainly Oscar contenders (Soul & Da 5 Bloods), films such as Palm Springs, The Invisible Man and Birds of Prey got a chance to receive major accolades.

Music City Film Critics Association

The Music City Film Critics Association is based out of Nashville and are slightly different than the other critics branches, as their taste seems to align more with The Academy’s, making them an important precursor. The biggest takeaway is the dominance of Promising Young Woman, which is beginning to assert itself as a top 5 contender. One Night in Miami, which has been largely shut out of other critics branches did quite well here, proving that it is still in the race.
